Mary Poppins
London, 1906. Bert, an all-rounder, is among other things a street orchestra man. A funny performance of his is interrupted by the East Wind, which makes him think that “something strange” is about to happen. He then leads the “wandering” viewer to Cherry Avenue, where the Banks family lives, past the unusual abode of the very punctual Admiral Boom.
At No. 17 Cherry Avenue, George Banks, an upstanding London banker, runs his home in an iron and precise manner, always demanding that things run perfectly. The sudden resignation of nanny housekeeper Katie caused by their two lively children, Jane and Michael, leads the Banks family to choose a new housekeeper. Doubting that his careless wife and suffragette Winifred can find an efficient nanny for the umpteenth time, George takes out an ad in the Times with the requirements that a housekeeper should have in his opinion. Jane and Michael, too, regretting the displeasure caused their father, write an ad of their own in which they decry their ideal nanny: Mr. Banks, annoyed, tears it up and throws it into the fireplace.
